Our recent undertaking has been to acquire some chickens. It started out as a means to the bug problem in our garden. We figured they would be pest control during the growing season, and then dinner during the fall. We were given 4 buff orphingtons, two of which were roosters and MEAN ones at that. They are now roasters in our freezer after they attacked Matty, Spencer and Alicia. But the hens are absolutely the sweetest little girls we could ask for and we have fallen in love with our chickens!
The kids named them Annelise and Nutmeg and they were followed shortly by two Rhode Island red chicks named Rose and Daisy (now Donald as we have found out she's a he)! And now also Belle and Aurora (names courtesy of Olivia).
Annelise and Nutmeg are our favorites as they are soooo gentle and friendly. Annelise in particular puts up with rides in the wagon and the wheelbarrows, all the baby chicks we bring home, rounds in the baby swing and Matthew, who loves to catch her and carry her around! She is just this big ball of fluff in his arms and half his size! It is the funniest thing!
